"Aboco" is an alphabet book, in Esperanto, colourfully illustrated in plasticene.
It is an ideal resource for encouraging young children to explore basic ideas about foreign languages such as letters vs characters, non-English letters, non-English sounds, different words for the same things, and the number and distribution of languages.
A 4-page, illustrated "Aboco Teacher's Guide" to help you make the most of the resource, is available as a FREE download here.
Children love the unconventional structure of the book: its 34 pages of the book are all printed on the same side of 7 over metres (!) of cover-card folded zig-zag, so that it can be used as a wall-frieze, suitable for a classroom or a child's bedroom, or handled as a normal board-book.You can see the book at full stretch here.
"Aboco" shows one word per page for each letter of the Esperanto alphabet, then three pages of the words for singing the alphabet, and a memory quiz, showing all of the pictures together.
Esperanto is an increasingly popular "apprenticeship language" because it provides an accessible overview of language essentials, and satisfying age-appropriate contacts in many cultures and improves motivation and effectiveness of subsequent language education.
"Aboco" can be either the start of that process, or a free-standing experience in language awareness.
The back page blurb includes a reference to the Foothills School students who made most of the pages originally and offers a link to a sound file for the alphabet song.
