What impact would Jesus have on a resentful orphan? Or a Government informer? What was it like to be a member of his family?

The stories and reflections in this book attempt to answer questions like these. Although the storytellers are fictional, the stories are true to the Bible narrative.

Sylvia Bunting’s story-telling began with bedtime stories at Girls’ Brigade camp, and has not dried up since. Her love for the spoken word has grown through forty-five years as a lay preacher, and the tales in this book were first written to be read aloud. In a setting two thousand years old, these characters think and feel in ways we recognise today.

Reviews:

Local preacher in the York (North) circuit and past national secretary for the Girls' Brigade Sylvia Bunting  has gathered together some of the stories and reflections she has written to use as sermons in Faces in the Crowd – Encounters with Jesus (Ortolan Press, £6.95).  Her story-telling began with bedtime stories at Girls' Brigade camps and this talent has been honed into a masterly – not to say riveting – skill as she uses fictional characters to cast new light on Gospel stories in order to give an overview of Jesus’ life.  Part I contains stories which include new insights into the birth at Bethlehem, Palm Sunday and betrayal in the garden at Gethsemane.  Part II  has monologues from key characters from Advent and the Passion, and Part III, “Framework of Worship” offers suggestions for a service around each story in Part I.  In all, 120 pages of well-written, enlightening material.
