SUEZ 1952 – 16th Parachute Brigade


On the sands beside the Suez Canal a British Garrison of 80,000 guards the route to the East. India is newly independent but the oilfields of the Gulf are vital – Russia is hostile and threatens. Fighting is in progress in Korea, Malaya and Kenya and Egypt is a zone of confl ict too.


The natives are restless and inflamed by Government propaganda want us gone – but we are not listening.

 

Clashes, incidents, and death are a daily occurrence – reporting is suppressed.


National Service, “An emergency and temporary measure” provides 70% of the garrison. It will end one day – what then?


Seven years of peace and still food rationing, England is broke, still paying for WWII and in thrall to America.


In the ranks and far away we think of England but in Westminster our masters hold fast still to the lost reality of Empire and the flag. The illusion won’t die. It will cost the nation dearly.
