Elizabeth travels to Barcelona with her journalist father who is to report on the Civil War. Terrified by street fighting, she shelters in a doorway where she encounters Maurici, a medical student. Later, she finds him lying injured in the hospital where she is a voluntary helper. A friendship develops but they lose contact when the city is bombed.


Maurici discovers Elizabeth’s whereabouts and their friendship deepens into passion. Because of his medical training, he must return to the battlefront to attend the wounded. There he is taken prisoner. When the Nationalists enter Barcelona, British families are advised to leave. Elizabeth is desperate for news of Maurici but must return to Yorkshire where she receives the attentions of local a landowner.


Distressed that there has been no word from Maurici, she soon suspects she is pregnant. Dare she hope Maurici will contact her, or should she consider the wealthy landowner’s offer of marriage.
