The Dog With No Name - How one dog inspired me to set up an Animal Rescue Charity

By Lesley Tarleton

The yard was covered in rubbish and broken glass, and on one of the rubbish bags lay what appeared to be a bundle of rags but which was in fact, an Afghan Hound. His coat was so matted that he was almost unrecognisable as a dog, and he was so weak, he barely had the strength to lift his head when Lesley approached.

But Oscar’s life was about to change dramatically.

His rescuer was Lesley Tarleton, the founder of Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre.

Lesley’s tales of pet rescues are full of humour and pathos. The daughter of Nel Tarleton, a British Featherweight boxing champion, Lesley enjoyed her teenage years in the Swinging Sixties in Liverpool. However it was a brief encounter with an unnamed dog in the 70’s that was to change her life forever.

Lesley cares for all animals and there has never been a dog she hasn’t loved, with the exception of that dreaded one that would follow her around all her life. The awful ‘black dog’ that is clinical depression.

Her story is an inspiration; a life of saving animals set against the backdrop of an ongoing battle with crippling bouts of depression. Freshfields Animal Rescue now saves over 2000 animals every year. This is how it all began.
