Aged 14 at the outbreak of war he witnesses the relentless blitz on Merseyside with miles of dockland transformed into an inferno of fires reflecting blood red on the river. Joining the navy at 17; taking part in the Normandy landings on D-Day, transporting troops, tanks, wounded and prisoners of war.
